The Red Mittens

Ok, technically this isn't a post about knitting, but in a way it is...

Last November I wrote a short story that I entered in Faith Writers weekly writing challenge. I won 3rd place in the intermediate level for it. It has to do with red mittens, and is in a way about mittens. Therefore, this post is kindasorta about knitting...

Anyway, I haven't made enough progress on my knitting lately to show pics of it (there is some progress though, just not enough to take a picture for), so I thought I would share this story. If you are interested in reading it (it's not long) you can find it here by clicking this link.

Drop me a comment here on my blog and let me know what you thought of it.

Happy knitting!

Oh Shelley, I have tears in my eyes as I read your beautiful story. I am sure the judges were moved as deeply as well resulting in your 3rd place.

My SIL prints our church newsletter and she is always on the lookout for nice stories, sayings etc. to put in there every week, is there a copyright on your story as I know it is just the thing she would love to include in there.

Crying too. Sometimes kids can be so cruel, but then there are the ones that are so sweet and innocent and have a giving spirit. What a wonderful story. Congrats on your 3rd place.
You asked what my baby sock count is, so far 47 pair (that's with some I knit in February that I don't have pics of) I'm still knitting. Will take them to the post office tomorrow.

Shelley, I'll go read your story and then I'm off the pc...smile. I haven't gotten ANY knitting done, and I feel I cheated myself but time is still ticking away...smile. By God's grace I will get that sock knit. Well, maybe not That sock, if I still have trouble but I want to try at least once more.

Goodness the tears came to my eyes also. It's a beautiful story, Shelley.

My own grandmother knit mittens for all of her great-grandchildren every year because that was all she could afford to do for Christmas. What was left after each picked out their size & color, went to the church to give to other children. Much of the yarn she used was from what I gave her every year, new & left-overs because she couldn't always afford yarn either. She gave what she could using her skill & love of knitting. Your story was one that hit home & I think of how I miss my Grandmother.

I can't imagine why you didn't get 1st place!

The story brought a sad smile to my face. How wonderful. It's what it's all about, isn't it. My Grandma taught me to knit, too, and it's a memory I treasure although I HATED it at the time. I'm glad she stayed with it. I was a compliant child, but as a left-hander (learning to knit right-handed...thank you, Grandma) it was so difficult for me.

Bless you in your future writing endeavors. enjoyed my visit~

Thank you all for your encouraging comments!

Sharon, I will check with the people over where I entered to see if I am allowed to use it again or not, and I'll get back to you on it :o)
