Oh The Horror Of It All!

I got my first sock of the Falling In Love pattern finished a little while ago. Ok...hold back those cheers. I attempted to change the pattern a little - nothing major, I just added ribbing to the top of the sock. I finished on a row 5 so that the heart pattern would be completed and then did about an inc of the ribbing.

It look fine that way, at least I think. The foot looks horrible big in comparison with the leg section, but that's neither here nor there.

Here's where the horror comes in. I tried to put the sock on, and couldn't get it over my heel! The ribbing felt a little tight on the last round when I tried it on, so even though I did the bind off very loosely, it still didn't have any give when I tried to get it over the heel. So, because I can't get it over my heel, I don't know if the leg is too tight or not...it did feel a little snug as I tried to get it over my foot...

This is where I need your help. I've never binded off with ribbing (except on a scarf when it didn't really matter if it was a little tight or not, because it didn't affect the look or anything). Is there a way to remedy this? I'm assuming I'll have to take out the ribbing. Can someone point me in a direction where I can find how to do this kind of bind off without it being too tight? Should I have gone up to 2.75mm needles to do it?

At this point, I think I will hold off on doing the second sock until I can fix the situation...oh well, this won't get done to count for February's Socktopia pair. Sigh...

My first instinct is to say that you could just take out the bind off and just bind of in pattern, however, I found this:

It will probably be 1 million times more helpful than what I could possibly explain. If not, I'll see if I can fish something else up!!!!

Cast off in rib and use larger needles, I'd go up to size 3mm. When they are on it won't look baggy at all.

:) They do look great though.

First thought that comes to my mind, too, is cast off with larger needs. I hope you get it to work! It looks great!

Oh, that must be so frustrating. I hate it when a project is finally completed, only to find out it's not really completed! Your sock looks quite lovely, though!

In the knitty article there is the sewn bind off by Elizabeth Zimmerman. I have used just about all the bind offs in the article but the sewn one is the best. I learned how to do it at a Lucy Neatby seminar at the Wool Farm a few years ago. Just remember don't over do it. Try to keep it loose but not too loose. I promise it will work. If you have to take the same weight yarn, cast on about 10 ot 15 stitches per needle, knit about 5 or so rows and then practice the bind off so that you can get the feel of it before you do it on your actual socks you will probably get great results. Let me know how you make out.

Your sock looks so great! I'm sorry it doesn't fit right. I have no solutions for you that haven't already been mentioned. Good luck!

I can't offer any new advice as the other suggestions are all good. I hope you get it sorted though because it's a lovely sock.

Well.. the sock looks WONDERFUL! Hope you can fix the top part. Wish I was more helpful, but, alas, I'm pretty much just a sock-knitter wannabe at this point!!

The socks look nice. I, too would suggest the EZ sewn cast off or a yarn over cast off, or just something as simple as going up a couple needle sizes. Good luck with which ever you choose

Sorry to hear the sock don't fit. I've got huge, wide feet and big calves and my socks fit fine soit may be the bind off. Try the sewn bind off. Or Bind off in rib pattern on 3mm or 3.5mm needles. Sewn bind off is beter though .Good luck

Lovely scarf!

As for your bind off problem with your socks, I had exactly the same problem with a sock I finished yesterday. The 1x1 rib seemed stretchy enough, but it wouldn't go over my heel :(

I did some research and the consensus was that a bind off called Knit-One Purl-One Bind-Off was the way to go. I found lots of written instructions, but they all confused me. Then, I found a video tutorial here Scroll down towards the bottom of the page to find it. My socks go on without a problem now.

Good luck!
